    The effect of family background and environmental factors on academic achievement of secondary school students in Saki West Local Government Area.

    The study investigated the relationship between the role of family background and environment on academic is achievement of secondary school students. The study made use of the random sampling technique, which involved two thousand (2000) respondents consists of male and female students in selected secondary schools in urban and rural areas within Saki West Local Government Area of Oyo State. The correlational research design was adoptedfor the study. The research instrument used is the family backgro und and environment questionnaire. The method of data analysis used for the study is the multiple regression analysis. This was used in the study to establish the relationship between the independent and dependent variables of the study. Two research questions were tested using the data obtainedfrom the field. The research questions were tested at the 0.05 level of significance and the research findings indicated that the independent variables (Socioeconomic status, family size, school location, school environment, physical facilities and peer influence) were significant contributions to the prediction of the dependent variable (Academic Achievement). The results of the findings as well as the appropriate recommendations based on the findings were highlighted. Conclusion was drawn based on the outcome of the study.

    Comparative Analysis of West African School Certificate Examinations and National Examination Council Results in Mathematics, English Language and Biology from 2001 – 2006 in Oyo State, Nigeria

    The study investigated the relationship between the grades awarded by both WAEC and NECO in Mathematics, English language and Biology papers in SSCE from 2001 - 2006 in Oyo State. The sample consists of 1468 participants. Pearson product moment correlation test statistic was used for analyzing the data generated in the study. The finding reveals that, there is significant correlation between the grades awarded by both WAEC and NECO from 2001 - 2006 in Mathematics, English Language and Biology papers which are principal subjects at ordinary level examinations. The necessary recommendations were made fee students, parents, guidance counsellor, government and stake holders on the reliability and validity of SSCE conducted by both WAEC and NECO.

    Relationship between Sports Knowledge, Sports performance and Academic Ability: An Empirical evidence from WAEC Physical Education Results in Oyo State

    The study investigated the relationship between sports knowledge, sports performance and academic ability of individuals that took part in sports activities, with regard to their performance in Physical Education at the Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by WAEC in 2001 and 2002 in Oyo State. The study is an ex-post facto of survey type. The sample consists of 120 participants (85 males and 35 females), with age range of 16 to 20 years. The Pearson product moment correlation test statistics was used for analyzing the data generated in the study. The findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between sports knowledge and sports performance on academic ability of the participants irrespective of their sports knowledge and sports performance. It was recommended, among others, that parents and guardians should encourage their children/ wards to participate in sports.

    Overcoming global recession in sport through sport economic regeneration activities

    The economic importance of sport in the World today cannot be overemphasized. According to International Platform on Sport Development (2007) sport can contribute to economic development by creating additional source of income, such as manufacturing of Sporting goods, the development of Sport-related services, infrastructure or sport events. Even in this time of global economic recession, the business of professional sports is not only able' to withstand the current global economic downturn, according to Gillett (2009), it can find opportunity amid the tough times. However lese opportunities may not materialized in Nigeria except certain measures are taking, hence the reason for this study was on Sport economic regeneration and Global economic Recession. Nine hundred and sixty (960) respondents were selected for this study through purposeful and convenient sampling techniques. The study tested three variables (private funding initiative, concessional management and foreig direct investment) and the data collected were coded and analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages were used to analyse the demographic data of the respondents while inferential statistics f multiple regression was used to analyse the tested variables at 0.05 alpha level. The study reveal that all the three variables were significant, based on this, conclusions were drawn and recommendation made on how sport could contribute to coping with economic recession in Nigeria

    Budget planning, allocation and implementation as indices for intramural sports programme among osun state owned tertiary institutions

    Today, institutions all over the world consider it worthy to promote the social objectives of sports. This is because it enables the young stars to acquire socially acceptable behavioural pattern. But this seems not to be so in Nigeria, particularly in Osun State, where interscholastic sports are facing a lot of problems. This study therefore investigated budget planning, allocation and implementation as indices for intramural sport programmes among Osun State owned tertiary institutions. A total of 500 respondents were purposely selected from four tertiary institutions owned by the state government for the study. A self-structured and validated questionnaire was used to collect data. The questionnaire was analysed using the inferential' statistics of multiple regressions. Conclusions and recommendations were drawn at the end of the study based on the findings of the study

    Factors inhibiting effective administration of interscholastic sports programme among selected secondary schools in oriade local government area of osun state

    Interscholastic sport represents an integral part ofthe social physical education programme and in most cases it evolves from the intramural and extramural athletic. It consists o f the activities organized strictly between academic institution which is primarily restricted to academic trainee o f a particular level o f education and characterized by high skill level on the part of the participant which provides the opportunity to discover and re-discover themselves and through this they may launch into limelight. Unfortunately, this importance o f interscholastic sport is been eroded in Oriade Local Government area due to poor administration. The study investigated influenced o f administrative factors o f interscholastic programme among selected secondary schools in Oriade Local Government area o f Osun state. The population for the study comprises ofall principals, games masters/mistresses, sport committee members and students at secondary schools in Oriade local Government area o f Osun state. Two hundred and fifty (250) respondents were randomly selected from the population. A self structured questionnaire with reliability index o f 0.89 was used for data collection while inferential statistics chi-square was used to analyse data collected for the study. Findings from the study showed that poor officiating, scheduling and schools management apathy towards interscholastic sport are the factors hindering effective administration o f interscholastic sport in Oriade Local Government area o f Osun state. The findings were discussed and recommendations useful for the effective organization of inter scholastic sport were also given.

    Low enrolment pattern into physical and health education course: osun state colleges of education as a case study

    Physical education refers to the process of education that concerns activities which develop and maintain human body. It is an important part of the educational process that its evaluation as a teaching subject has developed tremendously. However, more students in the past were more than eager to pursue the course at a higher degree level that at the undergraduate level. But unfortunately physical education student enrolment in the Universities and Colleges of Education bos declined dramatically. This study therefore investigate the factor heading to low enrolment pattern into Physical and Health Education course in the two Osun State Colleges of Education. The population for this study consisted of all two hundred and fifty (250) respondents who were selected through quota sampling technique from the five schools making up the colleges. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyse the demographic characteristics and multiple regression on statistics set at 0.05 alpha level was used to test the hypotheses. The study showed that misconception about physical education and it double major status are among the reason of low enrolment into PHE ' departments in the two colleges. The findings were discussed in the light of the need to make physical education on fit into the dominant teaching subjects not only in the sciences but also in the area of social sciences/vocational and technical education

    Financial Options as Determinants of Sports Facility Development in Lagos State, Nigeria

    This research was carried out to look into Financial Options policy as determinants of sport development in Lagos State, Nigeria. It was in realization that huge financial investments are now needed to manage sports or to build new state of the art sporting arenas costing anywhere between N30 billion Naira. There are many options in financing sport and recreational facilities that involve both public and private arrangements and investments. This study looked into various finance ventures, as well as benefits and pitfalls of those options. In the study funding is separated into two distinct groups, public funding and private funding. A descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study while purposive sampling techniques was used to select 530 respondents from the population. Inferential statistics of multiple regressions was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance, conclusion and recommendations were also drawn at the end of the study

    This study was embarked upon to investigate the knowledge and HIV/AIDS At-Risk behaviour of Collegiate Athletes that participated in the 2007 Edition of the NICEGA Zonal Elimination Preliminaries held between 4th and 8,h July, 2007 at College of Education, Oro. This study became necessary owing to the fact that despite several campaigns on the pandemic nature of HIV/AIDS many athletes are still observed exhibiting HIV/AIDS At-Risk behaviour during pre-camping, camping, competition, and even post competition periods. The study adopted descriptive survey research design, while quota or maximum variation sampling technique was used to select the respondents; simple random sampling technique was used to select 5 sports. Descriptive Statistics of frequency counts, percentage and inferential statistics were used to analyse the collected data at 0.05 level of significance. The findings from the study revealed that all the tested variables; Knowledge, Cohabitation, Unprotected Sex, and Sexual Networking were significant. Based on the finding of this study conclusions were drawn and useful recommendations were suggested
