    Assessment of Ecological Predictors of Moral Decadence in Oyo State, Nigeria

    This study was carried out to determine the factors responsible for moral decadence in the characteristics of the adolescents and young children in Nigeria with the hope that such findings will pave the way to remedy that will safeguard total collapse of this country. The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type. The population of the interest cut across the age categories of adults from age 30 and above. Stratified random sampling was used for the study. The population involved were male and female and of different ethnic groups Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. A self-administered method of data collection was used with a reliable and valid instrument. The instrument was divided into six categories. The first category measured the demographic information of the respondents, while sections B to F measured the government, society, school, religious organisations, the parents and the children themselves a contribution to the adolescents and youths moral decadence in the state. The reliability coefficient of the instrument is 0.87. The instrument response format is likert form, ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The results showed that the government, society, parents, school and religious organisations have lost the expected roles on morality. Parenting style, unwillingness to take to correction by the children, get-rich-quick syndrome, parents looking for money at the detriment of taking care of the children, possession of the sophisticated phone, exposure to bad films; the use of hard drugs, broken home; age at marriage, not having good role model, unemployment and so on, and many others are the reasons why the society has turned upside down. The researcher concluded that the problems with children are caused by the government, schools and religious organisations, society, parents and the children themselves. Recommendations were made that urgent attention should be taken to forestall the total collapse of the value system in the country, that schools and religious organisations should do the needful.

    Government, Society, School, Parents and Students Factors as Correlates of Academic Dishonesty among Students in Oyo State, Nigeria.

    The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship, composite and relative contribution of independent variables to academic dishonesty in Oyo state, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive research design of correlational type. The sample of the study consisted of 541educational stakeholders and society members, parents and students alike that were purposefully selected from Oyo state, Nigeria. The sample was selected using stratified random sampling techniques among strata of the respondents. The instruments used for data collection is an Academic Dishonesty scale which is divided into seven sections. The first section is demographic information about the participants, section ‚A‛ to ‚F‛ measures the independent variable and section ‚G‛ measures the dependent variable indices of Academic dishonesty variable. The roles of government, society, school, parents and students’ roles in academic dishonesty respectively have reliability coefficients of 0.75, 0.72, 0.81, 0.67, 0.84 and 0.79respectively. Three research questions were generated in the course of the study. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression statistical methods were used for data analysis. Results indicated that significant relationship existed between each of the independent variables on academic dishonesty, also, significant joint relationship existed among these variables and all the independent variables were potent predictors of academic dishonesty in Oyo state, Nigeria. Among others, it was recommended that more studies on academic dishonesty are needed in Nigeria so that efforts at improving the standard of education in Nigeria could be enhanced.

    Counselling intervention for parents of special needs children

    Over the years, increased awareness of difficulties facing parents of special needs children has been the concern of professionals. Parents are usually disturbed and psychologically maladjusted with the arrival of such children in the family. The arrival in the family obviously affects financial, social, educational and emotional state of such families. As a result of the devastating effect of having special needs children in the family, counselling intervention for parents of such children become inevitable. This paper examines the reaction of parents to the arrival of a child with disability in the family, practical counselling for parents with special needs children which include: counselling parents with gifted and talented children, counselling parents of children with visual impairment, counselling parents of children with learning disabilities, counselling parents of children with hearing impairment, counselling parents with mentally retarded children as well as counselling parents of children with} speech and language disorder. It is recommended that parents should seek early medical attention as soon as they suspect any problem or disability in any of their children. It is also recommended that once the medical doctor confirms the disability, professional Guidance Counsellor must be consulted to counsel the parents on the next line of action.

    Perception, attitude and use of indigenous stories among yoruba parents in Lagos State, Nigeria

    In the traditional African societies, indigenous storytelling was a regidar practice where children were told stories by their parents and other members of the family and community. Storytelling played an important role in the family and it was a daily activity in the evening. Recently, many Nigerians do not like to speak their indigenous languages with their children and as a result, these children may not know their indigenous stories even though they know lots of foreign stories. This study therefore, investigated parents’ perception, attitude and use of Yoruba indigenous stories in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. Four research questions were raised and answered. Three hypotheses were formidated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Two hundred and eighty nine (289) Yoruba parents were purposively selected from both public and private schools in Lagos State. Self- designed questionnaire with reliability index of (a -0.84) was used to collect data for the study. Frequency counts, percentage, mean and standard deviation and t-test were used to analyze the data collected. Findings indicated that parents’ perception and attitude to Yoruba indigenous storytelling is positive, however the frequency of use is still below expectation. Parents with children in public schools significantly used indigenous stories better than parents with children in private schools. Based on the findings it was recommended among other things that storytelling in indigenous language should be used at home by parents, also Nigerian authors should be encouraged to write indigenous storybooks for children.

    Attitudes of parents toward their children with speech disorders in Oyo State, Nigeria

    Good speech is essential to both social and academic lives. However, when speech loss its quality, it attracts unnecessary reaction from the listeners which may eventually cause psychological trauma to the affected person. Reaction to speech disorders vary from place to place and culture to culture and this has been the major concern of special educators and speech specialists. It is on this note that this study investigates attitudes of parents towards their children with speech disorders in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study employed survey research design. A total number of fifty (50) parents whose children have significant speech disorders were purposefully selected. A questionnaire tagged Parent Attitudinal Scale for Special Disorders with reliability coefficient of 0.71 was used for data collection. The findings revealed that parent’s dispositions to speech disorders were negative as there was no significant difference between the attitudes of male and female parents toward speech disorders of their children. However, there was significant different between the reaction of elite and illustrates parents towards speech disorder. Based on these finding, it was recommended that there should be mass awareness about the implication of negative reaction and proper education about early intervention to stem the tide.
