Item The changing culture of information retrieval, use and storage in an academic library: a case study of the Faculty of The Social Sciences Library, University of Ibadan(2010) Igbeka, J. U.; Emeahara, E. N.The paper investigated the changing culture of information retrieval, its utilization and storage among students in an academic library in Ibadan, Nigeria. Data was collected through the use of questionnaire, observation and interviews. A total of two interviews with the Library management of the faculty over a period of two sessions, 2007/2008 and 2008/2009, was conducted. 100 users responded to the questionnaire. The questionnaire sought to find out the frequency of library use, the value users attached to the use of the library and why they used the library. About 49% of the respondents use the library three times a week, 40% of the respondents uses the library mainly to search for other information apart from their lecture notes, and 94% of the respondents showed how much value the attached to the library ' by their utilization of the information sources within the library. The study also described the online information storage practices in the library; the computer literacy level of users as well as the library user-education was examined. The study found that although students used electronic sources they still preferred to consult traditional information sources such as text books and thesis. The study also revealed that 51% of students liked accessing the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) because it is faster to use and time saving when seeking information although this is often hampered by frequent electricity cuts. On their attitude to the increased ICT presence in the Library, they initially resisted the changes but later developed interest and adapted as library use instruction was being applied. In terms of the utilization and non-utilization of the Internet there were complaints from the respondents that the time allotment was too short and the computers were not enough. Other respondents mentioned the issue of the server not working at a consistent and regular basis. The study also found that library support by top management in all its ramifications was vital in order to meet up with current trends in information service provision and development.Item The importance of libraries in enhancing qualitative education in Nigeria(Institute of Education, University of Ibadan on Behalf of Participating West Africa Universities and Ministeries of Education, 2012) Emeahara, E. N.; |Oseghale, O.; Fagbola, O. O.This paper gave an insightful discourse on the importance of libraries from a general point of view and discusses the various kinds of libraries. It highlighted the qualities of libraries and how they affect the quality of education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels. It also discussed the reading culture as it affects libraries and quality education at all levels. Quality library personnel and library organization with respect to quality education are among issues raised and addressed in the paper. The paper further discussed new trends in library operations, such as virtual libraries and their implications in ensuring quality education in the information age. It recommended the establishment of standard libraries and suggested ways in which education policy makers and other stakeholders in the educational sector could foster quality education through libraries.Item Relationship between information literacy and use of electronic information resources by postgraduate students of the university of Ibadan(2016) Adeleke, D. S.; Emeahara, E. N.The research surveyed the relationship between information literacy and use of electronic information resources for academic purposes by postgraduate students of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Samples of 300 of postgraduate students within seven out 13 faculties were randomly selected. Data were collected using questionnaire designed to elicit response from respondents and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics methods percentages, mean, standard deviation, analysis of variance, correlation analysis and regression analysis. Low level of usage of electronic resources, in particular, full texts data bases is linked to lack of search techniques skills by many postgraduate students of the university to access the myriad of e-resources. There was significant relationship between information literacy skills and use of electronic information resources at α = 0.05 (P =0.34). Lack of adequate skills of postgraduate students resulted into the non encouragement of the expected research-led enquiry in using electronic information resources (EIRs) in this digital age. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) course be part of the curriculum of every postgraduate programme, with emphasis on e-information literacy.Item Use of internet facilities and metadata as precursors to electronic resource cataloguing In Selected University Libraries In South-Western Nigeria(2012) Adebayo, O.; Emeahara, E. N.The study examined use of internet facilities and metadata as precursors to electronic resource cataloguing in selected academic libraries in South-West Nigeria. Six University libraries were randomly selected. One hundred (100) respondents comprising current cataloguers and those who had worked as cataloguers were sampled for the study. A descriptive survey method using a self constructed questionnaire was used. Six research questions and one null hypothesis were raised and tested using descriptive and inferential statistics of frequency counts, percentages, mean and Pearson correlation. Results show that there is a significant relationship in the use of internet facilities and metadata in cataloguing electronic resources. Other major findings include: high availability of CD-ROMs, electronic journals and web resources in the selected libraries, high availability of the internet, cataloguing modules and Online Public Access (OPAC) and high usage of internet facilities such as the E-mail, web browsing and Discussion forums. The respondents signified that the internet has helped in reducing their workload and the metadata in use in the library is very suitable for cataloguing electronic resources. There was a significant relationship between the use of internet facilities and metadata in cataloguing electronic resources (r = .298, P<.01). The importance of ICT in cataloguing activities cannot be overemphasized. Academic libraries need to equip their cataloguing sections with adequate ICT facilities. It is recommended that academic libraries provide internet bandwidth that is sufficient enough to carry out various tasks in the cataloguing sections and also attract sophisticated users. This could be achieved by acquiring VSAT meant only for the library instead of sharing with other units in their parent institutions. It is also recommended that there should be an action plan for the maintenance of IT facilities to forestall breakdowns and malfunctioning of the facilities. Some facilities such as computers and scanners needs to be changed or upgraded as the need arise.
