A.This paper considers the problem of scheduling in flow-shop by Johnson's Algorithm method and Genetic Algorithm method to find an optimal sequence for n jobs machine problem based on minimum elapsed time. In scheduling the two machine flow shop problem F2||∑C1, one has to determine a schedule that minimizes the sum of finishing times of an arbitrary number of jobs that need to be executed on two machines, such that each job must complete processing on machine 1 before starting on machine 2. We propose a heuristic for approximating the solution for the F2||∑C1 problem using a genetic algorithm.Item Application and comparison of three multiobjective linear programming methods(International Knowledge Sharing Platform(IISTE), 2011) Adeyeye, A. D; Charles-Owaba, O. E.A biobjective production planning problem was modelled using the Compromise Constraint Biobjective LP (CCBLP) method, the traditional Weighted-sum Scalarization (WSS) and Non-preemptive Goal Programming (NGP) approaches. Various preference indices were used to explore the tradeoff options and the L1 distance metric was used to determine the best compromise solution and the appropriate preference indices. The solution of CCBLP was the closest to the ideal solution with L1 metric of 0.326 and corresponding preference indices of W1 = 0.25, W2 = 0.75. Comparison of the results showed that the CCBLP is more sensitive to changes in preference indices than the WSS and NGP methods and hence it is more useful in helping the decision maker to make intelligent tradeoff decisionsItem Application of a neurofuzzy mathematical model in the development of a local oven design(Tapas Institute of Scientific Research and Development, 2009-12) Odior, A. E.This paper presents a contribution on the development of a neurofuzzy mathematical model that aids in capturing and analyzing the various parameters in oven design. The oven was designed specifically for domestic and commercial baking operations. The neurofuzzy methodology was used to regulate the oven baking temperatures to acceptable standards. Particular use was made of neurofuzzy model since it is an improvement on the process design. The work was motivated by the need for a more reliable and easily understandable methodology that guides decision makers in making correct decisions in a timely manner. The results obtained demonstrated that it is feasible to apply the model in practice.Item An application of artificial neural network to maintenance management(2006) Oladokun, V. O.; Charles-Owaba, O. E.; Nwaozuru, C. S.This study shows the usefulness of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in maintenance planning and management. An ANN model based on the multi-layer perception having three hidden layers and four processing elements per layer was built to predict the expected downtime resulting from a breakdown or a maintenance activity. A.This paper aims at applying a fuzzy logic control model to profitability in a case study of the plastic recycling industry in Nigeria. The studies of profitability components of the plastic recycling industry as used to develop a model framework and the application of fuzzy logic control model to the framework are given in this paper. A brief introduction to profitability concepts as well as useful suggestions and conclusions are all integral part of this paper which is based on the application of a fuzzy logic model of control to profitability concept in plastic recycling industry.Item Application of fuzzy logic to the optimal location of public utilities: a case study of pedestrian bridges.(2012) Oladokun, V. OThe level of utilization of many public utilities is, most often, influenced by their locations Huge public funds are spent annually on the provision of several public infrastructures, such as pedestrian bridges, that are grossly underutilized due to their poor location or citing. This study was aimed at developing a fuzzy logic based decision support system for the optimal location of pedestrian bridges in a typical Nigerian city. Various factors and their interactions that affect utilization of any pedestrian bridge were identified and characterized. Utilization data on twenty eight existing pedestrian bridges, spread across two states in Nigeria were obtained and analyzed. The triangle and trapezoidal membership function were used to build a fuzzy inference system modeling the dynamics of utilization. The model was tested with the real life data. Four factors: traffic speed, vehicle traffic volume, proximity to market and proximity to bus stop, among other factors, were prominent in influencing utilization level. The model achieves more than 75% accuracy in deciding the suitability of a location based on level of utilization. It is concluded that the fuzzy logic approach is a veritable decision support tool for public facilities location decision problem.Item Application of hybrid structural interaction matrix to quality management(Inderscience Enterprise Limited, 2008) Oke, S. A.; Ayomoh, M. K. O.; Akanbi, O. G.; Oyawale, F. A.This paper applies the concept of Hybrid Structural Interaction Matrix (HSIM) to the management of quality in a manufacturing organisation. The application is motivated by the need to evolve alternative prioritisation tools in quality management. A process, which could be used to analyse a specific situation, was presented by showing how Structural Interaction Matrix (SIM) and Hierarchical Tree Structure Diagram (HTSD) could be used to create a model. The result indicates the feasibility of applying the model in a specific situation in some useful insight into the problem solution. This research has serious implications for management in manufacturing organisation in that it saves tremendous energy and cost that could be expended on alternative prioririsation techniques due to minimization of time expended in seeking expert of opinion on the issue. This paper is new in that it shows a new dimension about thinking on quality management.Item Application of job scheduling in small scale rice milling firm(Asian Reserch Publishing Network(ARPN), 2010-01) Odior, A. O.; Charles-Owaba, O. E.; Oyawale, F. A.Rice is the edible seed of a plant which is a member of the grass family. It is an annual plant which is grown in many countries throughout the world and is the staple diet for over half the world's population. Rice milling firm has therefore occupied a significant position in the small,medium and large scale enterprises of many nations. In application of job scheduling in rice milling activities a framework for proper scheduling of activities (jobs) in rice milling processing firm in Nigeria has been developed. The methodology addresses this problem by supposing we have (n) customers to be served (where n is large); in what way should customers' order be processed such that the firm's profit is maximized while the customers are not unnecessarily delayed? The problem is addressed by using makespan as a measure of performance while the job orders were sequentially scheduled according to order of priority to achieve optimum results. The results show that CDS and A1 heuristics are preferred to the traditional method or USO. Accordingly, the CDS heuristic followed by A1 heuristic gives the best makespan result.Item Application of mathematical model to job scheduling in an oil processing firm in Nigeria(Science Hub, 2010) Odior, A. The problem is addressed by supposing we have (n) customers to be served (where n is large) in what way should customers' older be processed such that the firm's profit is maximized while the customers are not unnecessarily delayed? The paper addressed the problem by using makespan as a measure of performance while the job orders were sequentially scheduled according to order of priority to achieve optimum results. The mean makespan for the CDS heuristic is 35.99, for Al is 36.08 while for the usual traditional serial order (USO) method is 40.91. The average gain with the application of CDS heuristic is 4.962 and for AI is 4.912.The results show that CDS and A1 heuristics are preferred to the usual method of USO. Accordingly, the CDS heuristic followed by A1 heuristic, gives the best makes pan resultsItem Application of mathematical model to optimization of the production capacity of paint manufacturing company(Spring, 2008) Odior, A. O.; Oyawale, F. A.This paper presents a case study in the development and application of a mathematical model to optimize the production capacity of a paint manufacturing company. The organization specializes in the production of different grades of paint and paint containers. The paint production activities include; weighing of raw materials, drying of raw materials, dissolving of raw materials, materials filtering, material string, product inspection and quality control and product packaging.The processes in paint container production comprise of cutting of sheet metal, sheet metal rolling, sheet metal pressing for overlapping hook, cutting of top cover, cutting of bottom cover, coiling of sheet metal to shape, and pressing bottom cover to position. The study reveals that the time it takes to produce a unit product is directly proportional to the number of production stages Involved and the time spent at each of these production stages.This time is being represented by some structural equations which are characteristics of the system being studied.Item Application of mathematical model to the production capacity of a yam flour producing company(RIP Research India Publication, 2009) Odior, A. O.; Oyawale, F. A.; Orsarh, E. S.Yam flour is usually required for the preparation of pounded yam which is a daily nutritional food requirement for most Africans. It facilitates the preparation of pounded yam for both domestic and commercial consumption. The production process and the basic operations involved in the production of pounded yam flour have been investigated in other to estimate the production capacity of the company studied. A time study model was developed and applied to analyze the various basic operations involved in the production of pounded yam flour.These basic operations include; the selection of yam, weighing of yam, washing of yam, peeling of yam, slicing of yam with a slicing machine, parboiling of sliced yam with a parboiler, drying of parboiled yam with a dryer, milling of dried yam into yam flour with a hammer mill, packaging of the yam flour and sealing of the packages with a sealing machine. In this paper therefore, a mathematical model was developed with the application of different techniques of differential calculus to the component elements of the production process of yam flour. The study reveals that the time it takes to produce some kilogram unit of pounded yam flour is directly proportional to the number of production stages involved and the time spent at each of these production stages. A.The grinding wheel is made of very small sharp and hard silicon carbide abrasive particles or grits held together by strong porous bond. These silicon carbide abrasive particles are hard crystalline materials which are held together by the strong, porous bond and these abrasive materials which are of extreme hardness are used to shape other materials by a grinding or abrading action. The paper presents, an analysis of the various component elements of a typical grinding wheel using neuro- fuzzy technique. Among these component elements we have, the size of the grains and its spacing, volumetric proportion of grains, volumetric proportion of bonding material and volumetric proportion of pores. However, the work is new as it appears to be the first application of neuro- fuzzy to component elements of a grinding wheel.Item Application of neuro-fuzzy models to grinding wheel parameters(Research India Publications, 2010) Odior, A. O.; Oyawale, F. A.Grinding is one of the most important finishing operations and it is very useful in our automobile industries. A grinding wheel is made of very small, sharp and hard abrasive particles or grits held together by strong porous bond. The paper presents, a control system for grinding process using neuro-fuzzy technique. The grinding parameters include circumferential speed of a grinding segment workpiece velocity and work depth of cut. The maximum grinding temperature is very important since too high temperature will lead to surface burns and thermal damage to the grinding wheel as well as the workpiece material. For fuzzy modeling, all the numerical values are replaced with linguistic values. The research work can be applied to any other grinding process, whether it is a wet or dry grinding process.Item Application of time study model in a rice milling firm: a case study(RIP Research India Publication, 2010) Odior, A. Rice milling is a process whereby the rice grain is transformed into a form suitable for human consumption and it has to be done with utmost care to prevent breakage of the kernel and improve the recovery. Rice is a very important nutritional diet for over half the world's population and as a result rice milling firm has occupied a significant position in small, medium and large scale enterprises of many nations. The study reveals that the time it takes to mill a 50 kilograms bag of rice is directly proportional to the number of production stages involved and the time spent at each of these production stages. This time is being represented by some structural equations which are characteristics of the rice milling firm being studiedItem Appraise the cognitive alertness of night shift worker: case of bottling company operators in central Northern Nigeria(European Open Science, 2023-07) Bolarinwa,M. A.; Odetunde, M. T.Night shift, a common work schedule in 24-hour production companies has been posing some after-effects on workers’ health, ranging from physical to psychological, and lack of response to these effects could result in cognitive deficiencies for workers and increased downtime for organisations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the night shift on the response time of workers to digital visual stimuli as compared to the day shift. Twenty-two shift operators from a bottling line between the ages of 25 and 35 years were subjected to psychomotor vigilance test (PVT) using an android PVT application (Versor-PVT Version 1.03) to assess their response times to visual stimuli and analysed using the SPSS software to determine the data distribution, skewness, and kurtosis. Based on the determined data distribution, Wilcoxon signed rank test (WSRT) was utilised to determine the level of significance of the differences between the two of them. The recorded minimum and maximum average response times for post-day and post-night shifts respectively were: 609.94 ms and 733.64 ms; 644.56 ms and 944.17 ms. Results clearly showed that night shift has significant negative impact on the response time of tested operators, such as delayed ability to respond to situations, including fault rectification, thus causing safety concern, and reducing productivity. In conclusion, additional cost is imminently incurred on the part of the organisation in settling medical bills and compensations. The WSRT analysis indicated that there is 95% probability of generating similar results on repeating the experiment under same conditions.Item An approach for solving Iinear fractional programming problems(An approach for solving Iinear fractional programming problems, 2009-05) Odior, A. A.Linear fractional programming problems are useful tools in production planning, financial and corporate planning, health care and hospital planning and as such have attracted considerable research interest. The paper presents a new approach for solving a fractional linear programming problem in which the objective function is a linear fractional function, while the constraint functions are in the form of linear inequalities. The approach adopted is based mainly upon solving the problem algebraically using the concept of duality and partial fractions and an example is given to clarify the developed method.Item An assessment of the manufacturing capabilities of Nigerian funiture makers: case study of Lagos, Nigeria(The Nigerian Institution of Engineering Management, 2011) Oladokun, V. O.; Ojo, A. O.; Sunmonu, S. O.This study examines the manufacturing capabilities of the Nigerian furniture industry. An extensive review of literature was carried on wood; structure, seasoning types, properties and finishing. Also, a review on wood furniture manufacturing processes, in terms of tools, equipment, design, ergonomics, finishing was carried out. Interview, observation, discussion and survey method were used for data gathering from some selected furniture workshops in Lagos. An assessment of the furniture industry in Nigeria in terms of processes, finishing techniques, aesthetics, tools and equipment, was carried out and compared with standards furniture manufacturing industry in Nigeria in terms of processes from literature and practices obtained in some developed countries. The study concludes that improvement and investment in the areas of equipment, machines, improvement in power supply and a programme to train the local furniture makers are required to improve the output from the sector.
